ALTUG ÜNLÜ wurde am 8. November 1965 in Istanbul geboren. 1980 übersiedelte er nach Hamburg. Dort studierte er nach dem Abitur Komposition/Theorie an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater bei György Ligeti und bei Wolfgang-Andreas Schultz sowie historische Musikwissenschaft an der Universität bei Constantin Floros. Er erhielt während seines Studiums zahlreiche Stipendien. 2000 wurde er für seine Kompositionen mit dem Bach-Preis-Stipendium der Stadt Hamburg ausgezeichnet. Seit 2000/2001 lehrt er als Professor für Tonsatz an der Robert-Schumann-Hochschule Düsseldorf. Zu seinen theoretischen Schriften zählen Beiträge über Mozart, Chopin, Wagner und Mahler. Seine Dissertation über Gustav Mahlers Instrumentation (Gustav Mahlers Klangwelt. Studien zur Instrumentation) ist 2006 erschienen. Im Jahr 2008 wurde unter dem Motto »Musikstadt Hamburg. Eine klingende Chronik« der 1. Satz seines Klavierkonzerts — Hommage à Béla Bartók auf CD veröffentlicht. 

ALTUG ÜNLÜ was born on 8th November 1865 in Istanbul. He moved to Hamburg in 1980. After school he studied Composition/Music Theory under György Ligeti and Wolfgang-Andreas Schultz at the College of Music and Theatre and historical musicology under Constantin Floros at the University of Hamburg. During his studies he became numerous scholarships. In 2000 he was awarded the Bach scholarship of Hamburg. Since 2000/2001 he is teaching as Professor for composition/structure at the Robert-Schumann College Dusseldorf. He wrote theoretical essays about Mozart, Chopin, Wagner and Mahler. His dissertation about the instrumentation of Gustav Mahler (Gustav Mahlers Klangwelt. Studium zur Instrumentation) was published in 2006. In 2008 the first movement of his piano concert – Hommage à Béla Bartók was published on CD under the slogan “Musikstadt Hamburg. Eine klingende Chronik”.
